When working with really large tables in Tableau Prep, instead of manually dragging and dropping each column in the profile pane, users can now drag-and-drop to sort data columns in the field list view. Once the user has specified their column order, the order is maintained across the entire flow and the final output after the flow is run.

You can now come back and edit existing metrics to change the historical comparison period, the date range used by the metric, and the status indicators. Do more in the flow of work with Slack! Tableau Prep will now be able to push notifications through Slack to let you know if your scheduled prep flow has been suspended or failed in any way. Notifications allow you to act quickly to fix your flow job and keep data fresh.

Tableau 2022.1 introduces filter performance at scale. Whether your dashboard has 1, 8, or more visualizations and multiple controls, you will have a highly responsive and consistent experience. The enhancements in filter performance will deliver a much faster experience when using show filters, session cloning, filter item selection, mark selection, tab switching, Show Me, screen resizing, and menus access. Available in Tableau Online and Tableau Server.

More connectivity to Salesforce means easily visualizing the metrics that matter most to your business. With Virtual Connections, instead of one connection per piece of Tableau content (data source, workbook, flow), and each connection requiring its own extract and security management, you can create one common managed connection that can access multiple tables in the same Salesforce database. You can manage extracting the data and the security in one place—at the connection level.

In version 2022.1, Tableau Prep is adding even more places where you can use parameters in your flow as well as user enhancements. Now you can:Delete parameters with a single click instead of manually finding and removing them from the flow first.Include parameters in SQL scripts that you run before or after writing the flow output to a database. Include parameters in worksheet names when writing the flow output to Microsoft Excel.Include parameter override values when running flows using the REST API.

Understand content performance, prioritize which dashboards need improvements, and gain visibility into your visualization load times on your site with the new Viz Load Times Data Source and updated starter workbook in Admin Insights as part of Tableau Online.

Easily automate the orchestration of multiple flow jobs, ensuring they happen in sequence after each task completes successfully. Building on the Linked Tasks functionality launched in Tableau Prep 2021.3, you can now link tasks to run on already scheduled flows and set backup flows to run in case of a failed run.

Tableau has released a ‘silent’ identity migration job which will move current system users to new Identity Service tables. This job will not interrupt or interfere with any usage of Tableau and allows net new installations to operate with the new Identity Service by default. Seamlessly transition to a more modern identity data structure that enhances user data within the Tableau Server repository, with more information about the user's identity​.

Usage based publishing frequency in Admin Insights prioritizes updating the data in the content that's consumed, making data updates quicker in the sites that are used. For sites with low content usage, Admins have the flexibility to choose if that Admin Insights content is published daily or weekly.

Make workbooks up to 100x faster with the push of a button. Workbook owners can use the View Acceleration button to accelerate their most important views that could use a boost in Tableau Online and Tableau Server.

You can now format trend lines and reference lines when authoring on the web. Easily change the line's style, size, and color, or change the label's font, size, and color. Users can access these formatting options via the line’s tooltip, via the right-click menu, or by left-clicking on a reference or trend line while the formatting pane is open.

Right-click on reference lines, trend lines, highlighter cards, quick filters, and titles to access actions like edit, format, and delete. With Tableau 2022.1, you have more relevant menu items, right where you need them while authoring on Tableau Server and Tableau Online.

With so many innovations coming into Tableau, it’s time to introduce a new viz toolbar that will help you find all the out-of-the-box functionality through helpful tooltips and logical groupings. We offer an intuitive and great-looking experience to enhance your dashboard navigation in Tableau Online and Tableau Server. Also, the new toolbar supports embedding for your external applications. The available functionality within the toolbar will vary based on the user’s access level.

Managing multiple tables in your data model got easier and more flexible in Tableau Server, Tableau Online, and Tableau Desktop. Easily swap any table in your data model with the root table with a single-click. This capability allows you to change the layout of your tables quickly, consume your data model with a different root table, and delete a specific table without deleting its child tables.

A new calculation type called MODEL_EXTENSION_X has been added to Tableau specifically to call deployed models from TabPy or other analytics extensions. It gives administrators a new configuration option to control TabPy deployments by disabling the execution of arbitrary Python code. Administrators can now maintain a single source of truth in the Analytics Extension server by leveraging a central version control, while end-users have an improved experience by easily accessing deployed functions on their TabPy server and understanding the model's requirements before adding it to Tableau Desktop, Tableau Server, and Tableau Online.

As part of Advanced Management for Tableau Server, post notifications about the health of Tableau Server to Slack. Configure the Resource Monitoring Tool to send notifications to the Slack channel of your choice to integrate with your admin workflow.

Understand when Hyper writes to disk with Advanced Management for Tableau Server. The Resource Monitoring Tool will now also monitor Hyper spooling. Configure Hyper Spooling incidents to be notified when there is not enough available memory and the Tableau Server Data Engine process shifts to spooling, which impacts performance.

Install the Gateway process outside of Tableau Server. Configure a fully supported, Tableau Server-aware reverse proxy server and load balancer to your deployment and manage it in Tableau Services Manager for increased security, scalability, and performance. This can be deployed in DMZ (perimeter network) using Advanced Management for Tableau Server.

Design exactly how you want to present the tabular data behind a visualization within the View Data interface. A parameter is a global placeholder value that can replace a constant value in a Prep flow. Parameters can be specified at run time or schedule time to easily transition a flow to be used on different inputs and outputs with the same schema, as well as quickly edit values used throughout a flow in calculated fields or filters.

It's easier to clean up your data your way! Tiling builds on the already existing RANK and FIXED Level of Detail functions in Tableau Prep. It allows customers to distribute rows into a specified number of tiles or buckets based on a specified order by FIELD and GROUP BY or partition field.

Air-gapped Tableau Server deployments will benefit from the removal of single-pass activation for the first license key, clearer error messages, and improved file naming.

Now enabled by default, Server Authorization to Run (ATR) product activation makes licensing Tableau Server in cloud, container or virtual environment deployments easier by removing the need to refresh or deactivate keys and removing reducing maximum activation errors.

Released in Tableau 2020.2, Metrics provides the headlines for users’ data, enabling them to track key data points without having to access their dashboards. With 2021.4, you can now embed Metrics into your analytical apps, corporate portals, or webpages to provide a more personalized experience for different people and teams. Additionally, during Metric creation, you can now set the comparison period, the date range used by the metric, and automatically apply color status indicators, so it’s easier to spotlight a status change.

Choose from a variety of number and date formatting options for Parameters on Tableau Online and Tableau Server. For numbers, you can now easily format them to display negative values and localize currency with the proper symbol and value. For date fields, use any common date and time format or quickly customize it according to your company’s standards.

To enable even more users to perform spatial analysis in Tableau, we've added more WKT and GeoJSON support to Tableau. Easily translate WKT and GeoJSON text markup found in Excel and CSV data sources directly into usable spatial geometry in Tableau.

Control the age of the data shown to workbook viewers by setting a freshness policy that will not load any cached data older than the set policy. Easily choose from multiple policy options to ensure that workbooks with live data sources never have unexpectedly stale data.

We’re making spatial joins more powerful to unlock new ways to explore your geospatial data. When first released, spatial joins could only be used between point and polygon geometries. Now, we’ve expanded support to other combinations: polygon/line, polygon/polygon, and line/line to allow for a more complete and advanced analysis of your data. In this example, a line/line spatial join is being used to intersect one dataset that has major CA highway networks (as lines) and a dataset that has fault lines (also lines). This helps us understand which highway networks are particularly susceptible to seismic activity, since they directly intersect a fault line. With a line/polygon join, this can also be visualized on a state or country map.

Build dashboards using the dashboard Item Hierarchy in web authoring, enabling you to choose how vizzes and other items are layered and arranged in layout containers. You can now drag and drop to move, reorder, and containerize dashboard items in the hierarchy instead of in the dashboard itself.

Rename any published data source directly in Tableau Server and Online from the data source page or by using Tableau’s REST API—just as you would rename a workbook. All workbooks that use the published data source will receive the new name on the next data source refresh.

Since expanding Explain Data to Viewers on Tableau Server and Tableau Online, we've continued to improve the experience by refining permissions and explanation types. Site administrators now have the flexibility to choose when to enable or disable Explain Data features on their site. We've also added a new explanation type about missing data to help users understand they the values of certain marks are beyond the expected range.

Get notified about potential issues with data through Data quality warnings (DQW) directly in email subscriptions. Simply click on the link in the email to go directly to the dashboard impacted by the warning, and see additional details right away within the Data Details panel.

Provide curated and useful workbooks to your users as soon as they open Tableau Desktop. You can now customize the set of workbooks you want to display in the samples area of the Desktop start page, so that users can easily see and access relevant content—such as a workshop or other events happening that week. If you no longer want to use a custom set, easily switch back to displaying the default Desktop sample workbooks.

Generate a set of missing rows in a table with Tableau Prep based on dates, date times, or integers. Easily fill gaps in data to ensure downstream processes have full and complete datasets to work on, and build more accurate visualizations.

With Tableau for Slack, you can stay up to date on all of your data from anywhere. With our new product integrations, you can now get notified directly in Slack for data-driven alerts, when you are @mentioned in a comment, or when someone shares content with you in Tableau.

Personal Space is a new, private location on Tableau Server and Online where users can save content before it’s ready to be shared with others. Users can feel comfortable exploring data and staging workbooks in their own dedicated space, and admins no longer need to create private projects for every individual to achieve this on their site. Personal Space is available to any user with an Explorer or above license.

With Tableau Catalog, you can now see inherited descriptions right within your web authoring flow. If a description for a field or a column exists upstream from that field or column in a data source or a workbook, you'll be able to see information about where the description is inherited from.

HANA bind variable support is now enabled by default. Bind variables allow HANA to route correctly in a multi-node HANA environment, and allow for plan cache re-use for any HANA environment. In addition, maximize Tableau’s use of HANA’s bind variable capability when connecting via JDBC.

With Bulk Rename, you can now rename multiple fields at one time in Prep Builder and Prep Web Authoring, rather than individually change each field name. You can now add/remove/rename a prefix at the start of a field name, add/remove/rename a suffix at the end of a field name, as well as do pattern matching for 'find and replace' within a field name.

You can now define and edit Top N and Condition for discrete filters, unlocking more advanced filtering for data source and on-sheet filters.

Write ML predictions (scores) from Einstein Discovery directly into your data sets in Tableau Prep Web Authoring and Tableau Prep Conductor. This integration allows you to score data in bulk including writing in key drivers of predictions and improvements.

Similar to how you can update table column descriptions, you can now update published data source field descriptions. Instead of having to re-publish the data source every time, simply click on a field name and edit button to add, change, or remove the description.
